![]() ![]() I purposely classify it as a "risk" of being uncomfortable. While I like so much about the E-TEC, the risk of being uncomfortable (from fumes) while doing 7 knots in a following breeze sway me to the 4 stroke. Legacy E-TEC engine EV-Diagnostic cables are currently SOLD OUT.Īs Seahorse noted, I did decide to go with the 4 Stroke Suzuki. Since human perception of sound decreases with decreasing frequency, this again tends to favor the Honda over the E-TEC in perceived noise. The noise signature of the Honda will tend to be always a bit lower in frequency at comparable engine speeds. This gives a fundamental frequency ofģ-cylinders x (1-power-stroke/2-revolutions) x (1,000-revolutions/60-seconds) = 25-Hz The Honda has three cylinders which fire only every second revolution. This gives a fundamental frequency ofĢ-cylinders x (1-power-stroke/1-revolution) x (1,000-revolution/60-seconds) = 33.3-Hz When it runs at 1,000-RPM, the two cylinders fire every revolution. The 40-HP E-TEC is a two cylinder engine. I would suspect that noise from the engine will be attenuated by both the top coaming across the transom and the cabin walls.Īnother consideration is the number of cylinders. On this particular boat, the engine is covered by a top coaming and the helm is located in a cabin. I don't think there is any basis for making a claim that an E-TEC was going to be quieter than the Honda. The E-TEC has direct fuel injection, and fuel injectors of this type tend to make quite a bit more noise than a carburetor. I don't have any scientific data, but this may be a generally true observation at lower engine speeds. This matters to us, because at 7 to 8 knots, we will be cruising for hours. In general folks seem to think are noisier than comparable 4 strokes. I would appreciate any input on your thoughts. I may be running right at the transition. Again as we are only going 7 to 8 knots, a following breeze will bring the exhaust back up to the boat.ģ) As lots of our cruising would be at 1500 to 2000 ROM, I have a concern about the alternator output and the crossover from stratified to homogenous charging mode. This matters to us, because at 7 to 8 knots, we will be cruising for hours.Ģ) I got mixed input from THT on the fumes. Given its gear ration and the large prop it swings, I am considering a 40 or 50 etec.Īfter posting over on the hull truth, I have a few concerns about the etec:ġ) In general folks seem to think they are noisier than comparable 4 strokes. I really like the whole approach of the E-tec. Although the boat does not like going 10 to 11 knots. The Honda 50 cruises nicely at about 7 to 8 knots, WOT gets you to 10-11 knots. The boat currently has a 20 year old Honda 50 on it 25 feet long, 5000 pounds, and has a displacement hull. WE are the pround new owners of a Nimble Nomad. I am new here and looking to tap your wisdom. View Member Profile Find Member's Topics Find Member's Posts Boatin ![]()
